Pixel Fold 2: first elements on Google’s next folding smartphone

Google’s news in the field of telephony primarily concerns its work on artificial intelligence, but the American giant is nonetheless preparing the successors to the Pixel 8, Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold marketed in 2023. First elements also detail a potential Pixel Fold 2, heir to the brand’s original folding terminal.

First photos obtained by Android Authority reveal the probable design of this folding smartphone that will compete with Samsung’s future Galaxy Z Fold 6. These images show a device with a redesigned dorsal photo block, occupying two short lines and no longer the full width. The terminal also sports a much more stretched exterior screen than that of the first Pixel Fold. It must be said that Google had opted for a 5.8-inch panel with a 17.4:9 ratio, resulting in a smartphone 79.5 mm wide when closed (i.e. more than the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Galaxy S24 Ultra). If this first visual is authentic, the Pixel Fold 2 will therefore offer a more comfortable grip.

Towards later commercialization

Other information was released by Android Authority, to be considered with the same precautions. The Pixel Fold 2 is reportedly being tested not with a Tensor G3 chip, but Tensor G4, with 16 GB of RAM. Google would therefore equip its folding smartphone with a new generation of chipset, leading to new performances, but also a revamped calendar. Remember that the first generation Pixel Fold was announced during Google I/O in May 2023, then marketed at the beginning of the following summer. Equipped with the Tensor G4, it is a safe bet that the announcement of the new Pixel Fold will take place in fall 2024, alongside the Pixel 9. One question remains unanswered: the availability of the Pixel Fold 2, the first terminal of Google having been reserved for a handful of countries, from which France was excluded.

Before its fall event, Google will undoubtedly hold its traditional I/O in May, undoubtedly the opportunity to discover Android 15 – which has just appeared discreetly in easter egg nestled in the latest Android 14 beta — and, jointly or in the following weeks, the likely Pixel 8a and Pixel Tablet 2.
