Platform should come – minibuses should increase public transport

Municipalities receive feeder services to the bus stops from the state.

How do you get passengers on land to the next bus or train stop? The state wants to make micro public transport systems attractive to communities. These are minibuses or call taxis that pick up passengers in the communities. Interested municipalities receive 80,000 euros in funding from the state annually. State Vice President Stefan Schnöll (ÖVP) is currently having a platform developed so that the municipality’s systems can be integrated into the state’s ticket system. “It has to come from a single source,” says Schnöll. At the Chamber of Labor, the State Transport Council is running into open doors with the plans. The AK has commissioned transport expert Günther Penetzdorfer to carry out a study on this. “It’s a system that can achieve a lot if you do it right,” says Penetzdorfer. At the moment the distance to the next stop is often too long. “If we don’t reduce the distance to the bus stop, then the best new infrastructure will be of no use to us,” says AK President Peter Eder.
