Expected in November, the PlayStation 5 Slim is being talked about again, and more specifically the removable drive of the digital version.

Some have indeed noticed, on the back of a digital PS5 Slim bundle including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, a curious mention. Remember that, like its original PS5 counterpart, this model will not have a Blu-Ray player natively. This can however be added separately, but will obviously need an internet connection to be paired the first time. A measure which can leave you somewhat perplexed.

The removable drive of the digital PS5 Slim exposed

After a long series of rumors, Sony finally made official earlier this month a thinner version of the PlayStation 5, called PS5 Slim for short. A logical name, since it is a lighter and less bulky model, but which will ultimately completely replace its big sister. Like its predecessor, it is available in two versions: standard and digital, the latter lacking a Blu-Ray player.

However, it is possible to add such a reader by replacing the corresponding panel with an accessory sold for 119.99 euros. Knowing that the digital PS5 Slim is sold for 449.99 euros, compared to 549.99 euros for the standard PS5 Slim, Blu-Ray player included. However, to connect the removable Blu-Ray player the first time to the digital version, an internet connection will apparently be required.

A questionable security measure?

In any case, this is what was discovered on the back of a bundle including the new game Call of Duty coming (also in November) of said console. It is in fact indicated there that a “ Internet connection is required to pair the disc player and PS5 console during installation “.

This is obviously a security measure to ensure that the removable drive is an official model and not a third-party or counterfeit product. But such a precautionary measure raises questions. On the one hand, in the event that no internet connection is available during installation, the player will simply not be able to function. On the other hand, the need for a server to validate pairing raises questions about a future where said server will no longer be operational.

That being said, such a possibility still seems very distant. By then, Sony will perhaps have applied an update removing this prerequisite, unless the PS5 is then largely dethroned by a still hypothetical PlayStation 6, or even beyond.
