With registrations down 15.7% over the first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2021 (source: AAA Data), the new car market is in bad shape. The supply of semiconductors, in particular, remains very disrupted and limits the production capacities of manufacturers.

But in this declining market, plug-in hybrids (plug-in hybrid, or PHEV) are doing well. These dual-engine cars accounted for 8.1% of registrations from January to February 2022, compared to 6.7% over the same period in 2021 (source: CCFA). They are particularly popular with companies thanks to their advantageous taxation.

Stellantis at the top of the ranking, when Renault is absent from the top 10

In the ranking of the best-selling plug-in hybrid cars in France from January to February 2022, there is a 100% French and 100% Stellantis podium.

Thus, the best-selling model remains the Peugeot 3008 compact SUV, already at the top of the ranking for the year 2021. It offers two plug-in hybrid versions, 225 hp (3008 Hybrid) or 300 hp (3008 Hybrid4).

On the second place of the podium, with half as many registrations, there is another Peugeot, the 308. Available in sedan and station wagon, the freshly renewed compact is available in two plug-in hybrid versions. The 225 hp engine, notably shared with the 3008, remains in the game, while a 180 hp version is appearing.

Finally, to complete this podium, we find the Citroën C5 Aircross. Cousin of the Peugeot 3008, it offers only one rechargeable hybrid version of 225 hp. Note that the restyled version of the SUV will soon arrive in dealerships.

The rest of the top 10 is made up mainly of premium brands and SUVs, such as the Mercedes GLC, in fourth place in the ranking. It has the particularity of being offered in a gasoline plug-in hybrid version (GLC 300 e), but also a diesel (GLCv300 de).

If Stellantis therefore manages to capture a significant share of the plug-in hybrid car market, Renault seems to be in difficulty. While the Captur E-Tech plug-in hybrid took second place in the ranking in 2021, the city SUV is not even among the ten best-selling plug-in hybrid cars in France from January to February 2022. The manufacturer may be facing supply issues. The Mégane E-Tech plug-in hybrid, which rivals the Peugeot 308, is also absent from the top 10.
