The weekend is just around the corner and that means cake time! Our columnist Vivi reveals Grandma’s favorite easy plum cake recipe.

Late summer is here and what can I say: I love it! The evenings are getting a little cooler again, the days are getting shorter and there is a slight feeling of cosiness, although it is still wonderfully warm and sunny during the day. I particularly like this transition from summer to autumn on the plate, because it is the time of lush harvests. From fresh cherries, to blueberries, zucchini, pumpkin, tomato… and… plums!

The wonderfully sweet fruits are just as good as a healthy snack in between meals as they are as plum jam, plum compote or my favourite: Grandma’s plum cake. It’s quick to make and most importantly, really easy. For the best granny feeling at the weekend, mine even gave me her insider tip, which I will pass on to you.

Recipe for grandma’s plum cake

Ingredients for a sheet

  • 300 grams of flour
  • 200 g butter, room temperature
  • 100 g powdered sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 kg of plums
  • optionally some granulated sugar for decoration

preparation

  1. Thoroughly knead the flour, butter, powdered sugar and egg yolk together in a bowl. Then chill the dough for about 1 hour.
  2. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees top/bottom heat.
  3. Wash, halve, stone and then quarter the plums.
  4. After cooling, roll out the dough on a lightly floured work surface to the size of your baking sheet. Roll out the baking sheet with parchment paper and put the dough on it.
  5. Arrange the plum quarters in rows on the dough, sprinkle with granulated sugar and bake in the oven for about 40 minutes until the dough is golden brown.

Tip from Grandma: If you’re a cinnamon fan like me, you can sprinkle some cinnamon over the plums before baking, then sprinkle the granulated sugar over them and then bake.

I prefer to eat grandma’s plum cake while it’s still warm with a scoop of ice cream. Can you think of anything nicer for a warm Sunday afternoon?

Vivi’s top tip

You can also sprinkle a few chopped hazelnuts over the dough to prevent the base from becoming soggy, then place the plum quarters on top and bake as usual. And if you want to use the protein, here are some great tips from me.
