The fact that there seemed to be a hail of celebrity separations at times in 2023 may have something to do with the fact that even stable relationships were put to a tough test by the nerve-wracking lockdown phases of the previous pandemic times. But of course there were also numerous other reasons that led German and international celebrities to finally give up their partnerships this year.

Iris and Peter Klein deliver the celebrity war of the roses of the year

The year of separation 2023 started in January with the marital drama surrounding Daniela Katzenberger’s (37) mother Iris Klein (56) and her third husband Peter Klein (56), which continues to this day. Iris accused her partner of being unfaithful to her on the outskirts of the jungle camp in Australia and of cheating on her with the presenter and former Miss Germany Yvonne Woelke (42). The ensuing mudslinging would keep the tabloid busy for the rest of the year, not least when the two had to spend a while together under the same roof again in November on the reality show “Celebrity Big Brother”. Since Peter Klein has so far refused to sign the divorce papers, the two reality celebrities are still married.

Public showdown with the Pochers

Oliver (45) and Amira Pocher (31) fought a similarly bizarre war of the roses in 2023. After discussing their relationship for three years in their joint podcast “Die Pochers!” had publicly celebrated, they also announced their separation on this channel on August 31st after seven years of relationship and four years of marriage. There Amira opened up to the fans: “We thought that this is probably the best way to say it: We are separated.” Shortly afterwards, Oliver Pocher continued his podcast series with, of all people, his ex-wife Sandy Meyer-Wölden (40) – under the new title “The Pochers! Freshly recycled”.

German TV stars switch to divorce

Especially at the beginning of 2023, a surprising number of other relationships between German TV stars broke up. Power talker Markus Lanz (54) separated from his wife Angela Gessmann (41) after twelve years of marriage, “Let’s Dance” presenter Victoria Swarovski (30) separated from her husband Werner Mürz (46) after six years of marriage and television star Sylvie Meis (45) after almost two and a half years by the artist Niclas Castello (45).

Celebrity designer Harald Glööckler (58) and his life partner Dieter Schroth (74) lasted much longer, spending 35 years side by side until they announced their separation to the “Bild” newspaper in mid-February. The end of the relationship between the musician couple Johannes Oerding (41) and Ina Müller (58), who had lived together for twelve long years, also caused general consternation.

Slate house blessing with Kevin Costner

Some prominent couples also parted ways on the international stage. By far the most headlines were generated by the end of the relationship between Hollywood star Kevin Costner (68), whose wife Christine Baumgartner (49) unexpectedly filed for divorce in May 2023 after an 18-year marriage. In the film-like War of the Roses that followed, the two quarreled primarily over questions of maintenance and custody of their three children. The dispute, which was fought through lawyers, escalated when Costner insisted on Baumgartner’s move out of the family estate in California and finally sent her out the door via a court order.

Hollywood’s model marriages are coming to an end

Also after 18 years of marriage, the actor couple Tori Spelling (50) and Dean McDermott (57) decided to go their separate ways in June of this year. A little later, Hollywood stars Hugh Jackman (55) and Deborra-Lee Furness (68) also announced the end of their 27-year marriage, which had already fallen apart during the nerve-wracking Covid lockdowns. Her colleague Meryl Streep (74) caused a surprise when she made it public in October that she had already separated six years earlier from the sculptor Don Gummer (76), to whom she has been married since 1978 – and will probably continue to be married.

Pop stars are looking for new partners

In addition to long-term actor marriages, quite a few love relationships between well-known music stars also broke up in 2023, although they were all much more short-lived. Kylie Minogue (55) and her boyfriend Paul Solomons (47) lasted for a comparatively long time. After the two had gone through celebrity life together for five years, their partnership finally failed due to the difficulties of the long-distance relationship, which the two found themselves in when the singer moved back to her homeland of Australia at the beginning of 2022 and the former “GQ” creative director left behind in London.

US superstar Taylor Swift (33) spent six years together with British actor Joe Alwyn (32). The two said goodbye amicably in April, and the singer, who has since been named “Person of the Year 2023,” is now making headlines with a new liaison with football player Travis Kelce (34).
