With the Poco F5 and the Poco F5 Pro, the Xiaomi subsidiary is launching two lightning-fast mid-range cell phones. Our quick check shows whether the purchase is worthwhile, depends on the time.
The Xiaomi subsidiary caused a stir five years ago with the Pocophone F1. At the time, a mobile phone with flagship technology was available for less than 400 euros. Since then there has been hype every year about the manufacturer’s new F models – even if the price-performance ratio is still good, but nowhere near as outstanding as it was in 2018.
This also applies to the two new models Poco F5 and F5 Pro. These are particularly attractive at the early bird price. The F5 is available from 379.90 euros and the F5 Pro from 479.90 euros. These prices are only valid for a few days for the time being. They then usually cost 479.90 or 579.90 euros. A still fair price – but there are also alternatively similarly good products or even better equipped products – such as the Xiaomi 12T Pro.
This is where the strengths of the F5 and F5 Pro lie
The two Pocophones stand out from the competition in the middle class above all with their computing power. Both the basic variant with its Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 processor and the Pro model with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 achieve around 1 million points in AnTuTu. Not even the Pixel 6a with its powerful tensor chip can match that. There is currently nowhere else with more computing power than the Poco F5 at the early bird price – especially since the similarly located competition from Realme and OnePlus are currently not allowed to sell in Germany.
Another strength is the fast charging with up to 67 watts, which the competition from Samsung and Google do without. The basic model also has a jack connection for headphones, but the competition has now almost completely dropped the connection – even in the mid-range.
With its QHD display and the option of wireless charging, the Poco F5 Pro has two other properties that are rarely found in the middle class. So if you want maximum technology for your money, this is the right model for you.
These are the weaknesses of the new Poco phones
It is uncertain how long Poco will provide the F5 and F5 Pro with updates. Traditionally, the Poco devices don’t have the best reputation when it comes to cameras either. However, a detailed test must first show how good these are in the F5 (Pro).
So if you want long Android updates or take great photos – you’re probably better served with the upcoming Pixel 7a and the Samsung Galaxy A54.
