A Polaroid camera is easy to use: everything is automatic. You press a button and you get an image a few minutes later. This is no longer really the case with the I-2, the brand’s latest box available since September. And as surprising as it may seem, it’s a good thing… for a certain category of photographers!

The I-2 is aimed at experienced photographers, those who are not satisfied with the automatic mode that generally plagues the category. It has a host of manual settings to allow the user to express their creativity.

Until December 24, Clubic opens a sound box every day Advent calendar 2023 : the opportunity to discover unusual or practical gadgets, gift ideas for yourself and your loved ones.

We are not talking here about filters or gadgets of the same kind, but about the possibility of acting on the exposure time and the aperture as on a traditional SLR. Casually, it changes a lot of things if you have a little mastery of photographic technique.

Add to this a mini OLED display, an optical viewfinder displaying the main parameters as well as the possibility of controlling it remotely using a smartphone and you will understand its exceptional side.

Very careful lens

The Polaroid I-2 has a 98mm lens opening at f/8-64 consisting of three calibrated elements. A word on the aperture, which may seem low compared to that of smartphones (from f/1.8 on interesting models).

However, we must not forget that the surface to be impressed here is much larger than that of an SLR or smartphone sensor and therefore that having a very large aperture would require increasing the size of the device more than necessary. !

Other interesting features include the use of LiDAR-type autofocus to allow reliable focusing between 40 cm and infinity and the presence of a standard thread to accommodate a traditional filter.

Sophisticated images

In addition to fully manual settings, you can select aperture or shutter priority modes, multiple exposure or even activate the self-timer.

Without forgetting, of course, the remote trigger thanks to a Bluetooth connection. This requires the installation of a companion application and also offers control of the settings from the smartphone screen.

Very good, but what does that look like in real life? But good ! When taking portraits, we naturally get the background blur recreated by an algorithm on smartphones. The priority, aperture or speed modes allow you to compose sophisticated images and you can even create beautiful lighting effects with a little practice.

Finally, the synchronization socket for external flash is very practical if you work in the studio or with additional lighting. Not everyone does it, obviously, but it will delight professionals.

Should you go for the Polaroid I-2? No, if you are not a seasoned photographer. In this case, a traditional camera like the Polaroid Now will be more than sufficient… and above all much more affordable! At 699 euros, the price of the I-2 does not make it a box for simple vacation memories.

If you have mastered manual settings, want to take advantage of the beautiful integrated lens and especially if its price is not deterrent, then go for it! You can’t help but be won over by the performance of this instant device, truly unlike any other.
