Polestar O2: this magnificent electric convertible could finally be marketed

We will probably be treated to a production version of the Polestar O2 concept, revealed last spring. In any case, this is what Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath wants, if we are to believe his latest statements.

Who doesn’t dream of being able to drive in a magnificent high-powered electric convertible? Good news: Polestar could well market its convertible O2 unveiled as a concept last March! But no release date announced.

From idea to realization, there is still a long way to go

If the Polestar O2 concept had caused a lot of ink to flow last spring, no one expected to see this exceptional vehicle be declined in production version. But the brand’s CEO said in an interview that his ambition was indeed to make it a production vehicle, with the aim of marketing it.

Remember that the Tesla Roadster presented in 2017 is still not ready to leave the factories of the firm of Elon Musk. The Polestar O2 could top Tesla’s electric racing car if production could begin in the near future, but nothing is less certain.

The complexity associated with the construction of such vehicles is substantial, in particular because of their small size. Indeed, it is necessary to offer reasonable autonomy (between 400 and 600 kilometers at least) on this segment, so that a demanding clientele agrees to put their hand in their pocket, but it is very difficult to accommodate large batteries.

If a sedan of almost five meters manages to carry 100 kWh of batteries, with today’s energy densities, it is a real challenge that awaits Polestar with its convertible. As a reminder, Elon Musk confided in 2017 that the Tesla Roadster would come out with a 200 kWh battery pack, ensuring a range exceeding 1,000 kilometers. It is clear that five years later, it is still not possible.

Powerful electric cars

Finally, Carbuzz’s interview with Thomas Ingenlath revealed what the CEO thinks of ever more powerful electric cars, like the 872 horsepower Polestar 5: this power will no longer be exceptional, because Tesla can do it… anyone can do it“.

This was therefore an opportunity to recall that the power of an electric car was not everything, and that the sensations of driving or the precision of the direction were also very important, without being able to quantify them on a technical sheet. This is what would be expected from a production version of the Polestar O2. We hope that by then, Polestar will have the right to be sold in France, and will not have been chased out of Europe by Citroën…
