Polish Prime Minister denies plans to ban divorce

Opposition politician Donald Tusk has warned of an “alliance of altar and throne” in Poland. He fears that after the almost complete ban on abortion, the government could also plan to ban contraception and divorce. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki says that is a “blatant lie”.

In November 2021, people in Warsaw set out candles in memory of a woman who died in the 22nd week of pregnancy. Reproductive rights activists say the woman is the first person to die as a result of Poland’s restriction on abortion.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has denied that his government plans to ban divorce. That was a “blatant lie” by opposition politician Donald Tusk, said the politician from the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, according to the PAP agency on Saturday. Tusk had recently warned of an “alliance of altar and throne” in front of young liberal-conservative politicians. He expressed the fear that after the almost complete ban on abortion, the government could also plan to ban contraception and divorce.

The ex-prime minister also referred to recent statements by the Catholic priest Krzysztof Bielawny on Radio Maryja. He had said that Spain’s dictator Francisco Franco had banned contraception, abortions, civil marriages and divorces after he came to power. Then the number of births increased. Franco ruled Spain with an iron fist after the victory of the right-wing coup in the civil war in 1939 until his death in 1975.
