The model name contributed to this: P-51 Mustang was already the name of a successful fighter aircraft, but also the famous wild horse. Lee Iacocca wanted the two-door Ford to be “fast, sporty with a touch of romance” and with the logo of a galloping Mustang, adapted from Frederic Remington’s legendary paintings “Great Pictures of the Old West”. Walt Disney, in turn, knew how this automotive mix of pioneering dynamics and romanticized freedom of the Wild West had to be presented: at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. Disney developed a spectacular pavilion in which he presented the Mustang as the ultimate technical achievement of the Americans – and 51 million visitors came and were amazed.
