Poor documents – the scrap nuclear power plant is running out

Time is running against the operators of the Krško nuclear power plant – and for the concerned population: It has now become known that the Slovenian authorities are examining the application to extend the operation of the ancient kiln more meticulously than the nuclear lobby had hoped. This means that the shutdown of the reactor on December 31, 2023 is getting closer!

The Ministry of the Environment is now speaking clearly: If the cross-border inspection and the necessary safety upgrade of the nuclear reactor are not “legally” completed by the end of 2023 – then the “missing environmental permit prevents further operation”. In other words, the 40-year-old reactor from the Soviet era has to be shut down – at least for the time being! The documents submitted by the operating company to the Slovenian authorities were apparently incomplete and the officials repeatedly demanded improvements. “To blame” for this: the great pressure from the population – more than 51,000 people have already signed the Global 2000 petition supported by the “Krone” – and the great interest in politics from Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen downwards The nuclear power plant will not be able to withstand earthquake security and aging in its current state. Expensive safety upgrades are more likely to motivate the Krško bosses to shut down the plant, ”says Reinhard Uhrig, nuclear expert at Global 2000, with conviction.
