Possessor: a futuristic nightmare by Cronenberg, between eXistenZ and Les Crimes du futur

This month, UniversCiné invites you to discover Possessor, Brandon Cronenberg’s latest film. Son of the famous David, the director has nothing to envy his father in terms of talent… or ability to arouse terror!

Owner, what is it?

Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough) works in a secret organization that uses advanced neurological technology for criminal purposes. Thanks to an augmented reality helmet, she can in fact inhabit the body of a person to push him to kill, for the profits of extremely wealthy clients.

Everything becomes complicated for Tasya when she finds herself in the body of Colin Tate (Christopher Abbott), a man whose appetite for murder and violence far exceeds her own… To the point of dispossessing her of her own identity?

Cronenberg 2.0

The main lines of this futuristic and horrifying story are reminiscent of the works of the famous David Cronenberg. La Mouche, eXistenZ or more recently Les Crimes du futur… It is precisely through the association of modern, dystopian and organic elements that the Canadian director has distinguished himself throughout his career.

Rewarded with a Grand Prix at the Gérardmer International Fantastic Film Festival, Possessor could have been born from his brilliant spirit… but that is not the case! He is not entirely a stranger to the project, however, since it is that of his son, Brandon.

Already known for Antiviral, which won him the prize for best first film at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012, he repeats here the feat of equaling his father with a new one-way ticket to the darkest regions of horror cinema. .

Darkest narrative, but brilliant production!

Skilfully questioning the humanity of his characters, their limits as well as those of new technologies, Brandon Cronenberg manages to constantly put his viewer up against a moral dilemma that is as shocking as it is destabilizing.

Multiplying anxiety-provoking situations, he endows his futuristic fable with a hybrid aesthetic, sometimes modern, sometimes quasi-organic, of which only the Cronenbergs seem to have the secret.

Served by a great cast (in addition to the main duo, viewers will be delighted to find Sean Bean and Jennifer Jason Leigh in the cast), Possessor also benefits from a high-quality soundtrack, signed Jim Williams.

Known for his work on Grave and Titanium by Julia Ducournau, he once again manages to punctuate the most terrible anxieties with his mechanical or haunting notes to guarantee you the thrill and the discomfort.

Possessor is available exclusively on UniversCiné.
