When presenting the Galaxy S24 in mid-January, Samsung let the cat out of the bag: the South Korean manufacturer confirmed that it was working on a smart ring. There had been rumors to this effect for months. However, Samsung held back with details when launching the Galaxy S24. Now the company is providing us with a few tidbits of information.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, ​​Samsung is exhibiting the Galaxy Ring publicly for the first time – but only behind glass. We’re not allowed to touch or even try on Samsung’s new wearable yet. It would certainly fit well. Because Samsung wants to offer the Galaxy Ring in different sizes.

Available in different sizes

It is not yet clear how many sizes the Galaxy Ring will be available in. In Barcelona it is shown in 9 sizes. However, studies are currently underway with which Samsung wants to determine common ring sizes. This means that sizes can be added or eliminated. Even when asked, the company does not want to provide any information about the size of the individual sizes.

You should not only have a choice in terms of sizes, but also in terms of color. The Galaxy Ring will be available in three colors. In addition to a gold version that is reminiscent of a wedding ring, there will also be a silver version and a titanium version.

The focus of the Galaxy Ring will be on the topics of “health and wellness,” Samsung announced in Barcelona. The ring is intended to determine, among other things, your pulse, blood oxygen level, heart rate and its variability. However, an ECG is not possible with the ring, explains Samsung in an interview with Netzwelt. The manufacturer also emphasizes that the Galaxy Ring is not suitable for detecting diseases. It is not a medical device and does not replace medical advice. There will also probably not be a payment function on board. It remains to be seen whether there will be a vibration motor to show you incoming notifications on your phone.

The ring is charged via contacts on the inside. According to Samsung, there should be a case for this – similar to the one for the Galaxy Buds headphones.

Galaxy Ring with compulsory account

The Galaxy Ring will be part of the Samsung ecosystem, it was said at MWC. The data from the ring is therefore synchronized via Samsung Health. This requires a free Samsung account to be used. To achieve this, Samsung says it wants to forego making certain features only accessible with a subscription. You will only have to pay for the ring once when purchasing it, it says at MWC.

It remains to be seen whether the ring can also be paired with cell phones from other manufacturers and especially the iPhone. In this regard, Samsung has been taking a new approach for several years. While earlier wearables were compatible with the iPhone, the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Fit can now only be paired with Android devices. However, some functions also require a Samsung cell phone.

Not a replacement for the Galaxy Watch

By the way, the ring is not intended to be a replacement for the Galaxy Watch, but rather an addition. Since the ring is more compact than a smartwatch, it will probably also be worn in situations where the watch is put down – for example when sleeping. The ring would thus enable more continuous data collection. The Galaxy Ring also offers other advantages over a smartwatch.
