President Tebboune in Russia in May for a state visit

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed, during a telephone conversation on Tuesday (January 31st), to schedule a state visit by Mr. Tebboune to Russia to “next may”the Algerian presidency said in a statement.

The two Heads of State spoke “the bilateral relations between the two countries and more particularly the horizons of energy cooperation”.

MM. Tebboune and Poutine also discussed “of the next meeting of the large Algerian-Russian joint committee”which will be held during the visit of the Algerian president in May, the exact date of which has not been communicated.

Military cooperation

Algiers and Moscow have long-standing privileged relations.

In 2021, trade between the two countries reached $3 billion, despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

Military cooperation is no exception. Moscow is a major arms supplier to Africa’s largest country by area.

The most populous country in the Maghreb (with 44 million inhabitants) is in latent conflict with its Moroccan neighbor. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have been broken for almost two years.

Mr. Tebboune will also make a state visit to France during the month of May, but the Algerian presidency has not specified which country he will go to first.
