Anne Hidalgo, candidate of the Socialist Party (PS) in the presidential election, must unveil her full program on January 13.
Some 70 proposals “around the social, climate and democratic emergency” will be presented at a press conference. The issues of health and education will be “very present”, assured its campaign manager, Johanna Rolland. Anne Hidalgo will also give “a very important place” to Europe.
For now, the mayor of Paris has struggled to reach 5% of voting intentions in the polls. But the socialist candidate has not said her last word: she had already mentioned the strengths of her program, even before the conference on January 13. Doubling the salaries of teachers is its flagship measure. Or “align at least the salary of new teachers on the median salary of holders of a Bac + 5”, specifies Johanna Rolland.
Anne Hidalgo also says she wants to generalize the rent control implemented in Paris, so that households do not spend more than a third of their income on their housing. It is also in favor of the right to vote from the age of 16 and the creation of a climate ISF for wealthy households. In terms of health, she is committed in the columns of the Parisian to “stop closing” hospitals and to fight against medical deserts. For this, she proposes to create the status of “assistant doctor” in order to deploy interns in “territories in tension” with a remuneration “equivalent to twice as much as today”.
The fractured left
It remains to be seen whether voters will be convinced. The left is completely fractured between Anne Hidalgo (PS), Yannick Jadot (Europe Ecologie Les Verts), Jean-Luc Mélenchon (La France Insoumise), Fabien Roussel (French Communist Party), Arnaud Montebourg, and potentially the former minister of Justice Christiane Taubira.
To rally voters around a single candidacy, Anne Hidalgo proposed a left-wing primary in December. Its competitors declined, Yannick Jadot in the lead. Anne Hidalgo “took note” of this refusal, according to Johanna Rolland. Unless the situation turns around, it will not follow the popular primary in which Christiane Taubira will participate from January 27 to 30.
From now on, the mayor of Paris “focuses on the project, the program, and makes the bet to speak about the substance” in front of the “French people who tell us at this stage that this election does not interest them”, indicates Johanna Rolland. Anne Hidalgo will give a meeting in Aubervilliers (Seine-Saint-Denis) on January 22.
