Korcok initially trailed the Social Democratic parliamentary speaker Peter Pellegrini. After all the votes were counted, the result was reversed. Pellegrini, who had been leading in all polls for a long time, ended up with only 37.0 percent. The pro-Russian nationalist and former Justice Minister Stefan Harabin came third with 11.7 percent.

Since none of the nine candidates who took part achieved an absolute majority, a runoff election on April 6th is necessary.

Around 4.4 million eligible voters were asked to choose a successor to President Zuzana Caputova from among nine exclusively male candidates. Caputova did not compete again. The EU and NATO country Slovakia borders directly on Ukraine.

Voter turnout at the ballot on Saturday reached 51.9 percent.

The election campaign was overshadowed by the war in neighboring Ukraine and by domestic political disputes between the Fico government and the liberal opposition.

Korcok promises to be a counterweight to the left-wing nationalist government under Prime Minister Robert Fico. He advocates decisive military support for Ukraine. Pellegrini advocates overcoming the deep domestic political divide and urges caution when it comes to arms deliveries.
