A few months before the presidential election, the former First Secretary of the Socialist Party Jean-Christophe Cambadélis stresses the importance of the presence of the PS in the next election. For the former PS deputy, the presence of a socialist candidate in the election is “necessary for the country, but also for the left”.

With the approach of the 10th anniversary of the election of François Hollande, the left-wing parties continue to decline in the polls. Despite a large number of candidates, they are struggling to mobilize voters. According to a latest Ifop poll for the JDD, left-wing candidates only account for 25.5% of voting intentions. While some call for union, the former First Secretary of the Socialist Party Jean-Christophe Cambadélis sweeps away this option: “There must be a Socialist candidate. It is necessary”, he explains.

“I support Anne Hidalgo”

For the former deputy from Paris, the PS continues to have its place in the political landscape: “What the Socialist Party expresses is a certain republican conception. It is the question of social and ecological priority. No other candidate on the left does that,” he said. Jean-Christophe Cambadélis thus hopes to convince abstentionist voters on the left, thanks to the proposals of the 2022 presidential candidate, Anne Hidalgo.

If the latter still does not take off in the polls (3% of voting intentions according to the February 4 poll of the FIFG for the JDD), the former First Secretary of the Socialist Party gives his full support to the candidate: I I have always supported the Socialist Party so obviously I support Anne Hidalgo”, assures the former deputy.

“Order Factor”

Despite the support, the mayor of Paris could not be reimbursed for her campaign expenses if she does not exceed 5% of votes in her favor in the first round of the presidential election. A partial problem for Jean-Christophe Cambadélis who assures “that the Socialist Party has enough money to pay for the campaign”. And to add: “But, the party will not have any more after to be able to function, that is the subject”, underlines it.

And while differences are becoming more and more present in the camp of the French left, the former PS deputy warns: “I think that the presence of the PS in the election is necessary for the country but also for the left. Because, if this is no longer the case, the division you see (on the left, editor’s note) will multiply because an order factor is needed. And if there is no order factor, it is the disorder factor that prevails on the left”.
