PREVIEW Ghostwire: Tokyo, Towards the Unknown and Beyond

Last week, ahead of the presentation of gameplay released to the public this Thursday, we were invited by Bethesda to an online event to see more about Ghostwire: Tokyo, in addition to having access to some visual elements. This supernatural action-adventure game set in the Japanese metropolis comes from the minds of Shinji Mikami and studio members Tango Gameworksincluding director Kenji Kimura, originally designed specifically for the PS5. We were able to discover about 30 minutes of gameplay of a version under development taking place at the beginning of the adventure while the main character Akito finds himself alone in the streets of the city, a paranormal event having caused the disappearance of 99% of the population, at least in Shibuya. Finally, not really alone since he is possessed by a spirit called KKan expert in ghost hunting who will help him track down Hannyathe mastermind behind the phenomenon, in order to save his family.

All the same seems very rigid and slow.

The streets of Tokyo will not really be deserted in Ghostwiresince creatures called Visitors arose, the first crusaders resembling businessmen holding umbrellas, coming to capture spirits in strange boxes. In first person view we will fight them using the Aetherweavinga power using the elements with our hands, that of the wind greatly reminiscent of the spirit gun of Yusuke Urameshi in Yū Yū Hakusho, recharging for example by destroying elements of the decor and annihilating our opponents. Once weakened, we will be able to grab the enemy’s spiritual heart by holding L2, the action key used for quite a few things. More subtle, sneaking up behind one of them, Akito is able to eliminate them discreetly by purging them.

Among the types of objectives present in this urban open world, we will have to clean up Torii, the traditional Japanese portals, at the entrance to shrines to reduce fog on the map. In these are from Katashiropaper talismans capable of welcoming saved spirits. They will then have to be brought to a telephone booth to be sent back “outside”. Going to the apartment KKanother game mechanic was introduced : remove a seal by reproducing the symbol displayed on the screeneither with the right joystick or directly via the touchpad of the DualSensebefore releasing the energy by pressing R2 + L2. In the same way, it will happen that it is necessary to purge a spectrum with this method. Inside, Akito picked up a bow there to attack targets at long range. And when leaving, it’s a barrier that has arisen around the building, requiring soulstones to be destroyed on the different floors. This is where the whole psychedelic dimension of the game showed itself, the beyond interfering with the places by turning them upside down, altering the spatial markers (the floor becoming the ceiling for example). A nice trip under acid all the same being generally limited to following a corridor with some rather rigid jumps… To see how these situations will become more complex later.

Then, it’s another very useful power that we had the demonstration, the Spectral Visionfor tracing the course of a target like a Assassin’s Creed or conjure up items to destroy within Corruption, a mysterious substance that holds spirits. Secondary missions will be present where it will be necessary to help spirits in need so that they find peace, such as the Zashiki-warashi in the house of an old lady, with the reward of being able to use her power, whatever it is.

More fun, we will also meet other yokai like a Tanukisome like the nekomata running the grocery stores in townthe famous konbiniselling various items such as Katashiro or various dango restoring the VPs. the Tengu will serve as a grappling hook to move vertically and reach the roofs of buildings, while a strange ability will allow you to quickly move forward. And obviously, no fall damage is included even from the equivalent of five floors. The presentation concluded with the recovery of firepower for the Aetherweaving by releasing a temple, the water one also being confirmed.

Our first impressions : Good !

This overview of Ghostwire: Tokyo made us very curious and made us want to have the controller in hand to experience this gameplay by ourselves, although the whole seems all the same very rigid and slow. By the way, if the trailers highlight the English dubbing, this phase of the game that was presented to us was in Japanese with subtitles and very well made.

You can pre-order Ghostwire: Tokyo from €53.99 on Gamesplanet.
