If you didn’t follow the story last June, Nintendo announced the arrival of a brand new “Mario”. Her name ? Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Here, our mustachioed hero (and his friends) can transform and evolve in a shimmering 2D world. We had the chance to put our hands on it for a few hours, which is why we give you our first impressions of this production which has everything to please at first glance.
Impossible to let go of the controller, the experience is so gripping.
First of all, let’s talk about the graphics. We played it in mode TV and, let’s not beat around the bush, it is really beautiful. The developers play a lot on the various levels to tickle the eyes, the universes are really well thought out. Plus, it’s really colorful, and the animations are totally off ; Mario always makes a little facial expression when he performs an action. Gorgeous ! Quite disturbingly, some texts are a bit tiny… Obviously, in mode Portable, we have this fear of not being able to read various dialogues. We will look at this detail later, in our full test.
Concerning handling, we found our bearings quite quickly. Our friend can run, jump, spin, crush… A great classic in short. In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, we have access to new powers. As ? The possibility of transforming into a crazy elephant which has disproportionate strength, allowing you to clear passages, or even use the “Bubble Flower”, giving the possibility of creating bubbles, either to enclose enemies or to reach targets. elevated platforms. But that’s not all ! Indeed, throughout our escapade, we can collect “badges” which give special abilitieslike swimming super fast like a dolphin underwater, jumping several times on a wall, using your cap like a parachute, etc. It’s crazy and entertaining, these additions bring a bit of freshness to the license, it feels good!
Another point, in each journey, there are seeds that we must unearth to progress in our adventure. At a specific moment, the player sees a “prodigy flower” which allows one to be obtained. Only here, by touching it, the world changes its face and we set ourselves totally frenetic, mind-blowing and insane challenges. Pipes that come to life, creatures running in all directions, Mario which changes appearance, the light which goes out to leave room only for our silhouette… It’s mind-blowing! Honestly, it’s one of the new features that surprises and amuses us the most! It’s super original and helps you avoid the monotony of simply running straight ahead to reach your goal. In other words, a genius idea !
The problem of Super Mario Bros., is that we have the impression of still seeing the same game, but with new powers to try to entertain the player as little as possible. Here, Nintendo shakes up the mores of the franchise by bringing truly hair-raising, confusing and funny new features, in our progress. For the moment, the few minutes spent with Super Mario Bros. Wonder were able to convince us. Impossible to let go of the controller, the experience is so gripping. A pure marvel!
