Prey on Disney+: the special effects designer defends the new look of the Predator

On his Instagram account, artist Alec Gillis shares new concept art from the movie “Prey” and defends the differences between the monster of 2022 and its predecessors.

Who says new film says new creature. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, Prey brings color back to the Predator franchise. After several opuses of questionable quality, this prequel was hailed by critics and the public. On the American platform Hulu, where it was released directly, the film even recorded the best start in the history of this big name in streaming.

This opus depicts the monster in the 18th century against the Comanches, a native American tribe. Fans will have noticed: this Predator is very different from previous films. No metal helmet, no shoulder cannon and a more slender silhouette. For some fans of the franchise, this new design posed a few problems.

On his Instagram page, visual effects concept Alec Gillis – who previously worked on Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem – shares many of the film’s concept art and defends those differences.

Here is a comparison between our Wolf Predator for AvP:R and our Feral Predator for Prey (…) We knew the changes were going to be noticed and not without controversy. It’s proof of the brilliance of Stan Winston’s original concept. And here we are, 35 years later still making/watching/loving Predator movies. I am grateful to have been able to work on the first and most recent.”

Prey is available on Disney+.
