Prime Minister Hatien survived assassination attempt, cabinet announces

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) – Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry survived an assassination attempt on Saturday when assailants shot at him as he participated in ceremonies commemorating Haiti’s independence, announced Monday his cabinet in a press release.

“Bandits and terrorists” opened fire on a convoy of the Prime Minister near a church in the town of Gonaves, in the north of the country, where he was traveling to celebrate the 218th anniversary of the country’s independence.

Local media reported that one person was killed and two others injured in the attack. The police were not immediately able to confirm this information.

Arrest warrants have been issued against those suspected of carrying out the attack, the prime minister’s office said.
