With an official announcement concerning its arrival date and a price to be able to avoid it, Amazon has done what its users feared: advertising is coming soon to the streaming platform Prime Video In France.

It was through an e-mail that Amazon revealed to its subscribers the exact conditions for the arrival of advertising on its Prime Video service which we tested in our columns. As expected, this maneuver by the e-commerce giant has the sole aim of making its platform even more profitable. Or more precisely “ enable us to continue investing in attractive content and increase our investments over the long term, in order to maintain the quality and quantity of content on Prime Video “. On the other hand, unlike the competition which recently embraced advertising, namely Netflix and Disney+, here there is no question of offering a new package at a low price to compensate.

A definitely winning deal for Amazon…

From April 9, advertisements in “ limited quantities » will be included in films and series on Prime Video. It remains to be seen how this name will come to fruition (duration of broadcast, placement before/during the works, etc.). Amazon states: “ We aim to have significantly fewer ads than traditional linear TV and other streaming services. » We just ask to believe it. Among the competition, the average is around 4 minutes of advertisements per 1 hour of content.

To avoid these advertisements, Amazon is now offering to pay an additional 1.99 euros per month (and not 2.99 euros). This additional cost, which is added to the subscription which increased significantly last year (6.99 euros per month, or 69.90 euros per year), does not entitle you to anything more. Amazon also adds: “ Content from live events like sports and companion channels will continue to include advertising. » Unlike people using the less expensive advertising-based packages of Netflix and Disney+, here there is nothing positive to be gained on the client side.

…and necessarily a loser for users

Especially since it seems that people who decide to stay with the basic offer and endure advertising will see their experience slightly degraded. In the United States and the United Kingdom, where this formula is already launched, technologies like Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are only offered to those who agree to pay the extra. How long before Prime Video limits 4K and HDR to this additional cost or to a premium package like Netflix or Disney+?

Finally, in our regions, note that the arrival of advertising only concerns France. People residing in Belgium, the Netherlands or Luxembourg are spared for the moment.
