Prince Charles’ failed marriage to Diana will ‘always haunt him’

Prince Charles has been married to Duchess Camilla for over 15 years. But his first marriage to Princess Diana will never be forgotten – but not in a positive way, as a royal expert now says.

Princess Diana, † 36, and Prince Charles exchanged vows on July 29, 1981 at London’s St Paul’s Cathedral. At the time, Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son and heir, 96, was considered the most eligible bachelor in the world. But their marriage had its ups and downs. The fact that the British heir to the throne had an affair with his then ex-girlfriend and now wife Camilla Parker Bowles weighed heavily on the “Queen of Hearts”. In 1995, three years after her split from Charles, she even addressed it publicly in the iconic BBC interview, saying: “There were three of us in the marriage, so it was a little tight.”

His infidelity and divorce in 1996 repeatedly made headlines. For this reason, Charles will not shake the memory of his first marriage.

Therein lies Prince Charles’ tragedy

Royal author Andrew Morton, who wrote “Diana: Her True Story”, among other things, now tells “People” that Prince Charles cannot shake off his failed marriage even 25 years after Diana’s tragic death: “His [Charles‘] Tragedy is that whatever he does, whatever he says or however he acts, he will be remembered for one thing: the fact that his fairytale marriage ended.”

Just as people to this day associate Henry VIII with his six wives, the 73-year-old’s life would still be defined by his first marriage. Expert Ingrid Seward agrees, telling the US news portal: “Diana’s spirit really follows him every step of the way.”

A new life with Duchess Camilla

On April 9, 2005, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla, 75, were married at Windsor Guildhall. In February of this year, Queen Elizabeth announced that her daughter-in-law would be made Queen Consort once Charles ascended the throne. The royal couple had been waiting for this day since their engagement.

The father of Prince William, 40, and Prince Harry, 37, has built a new life with his second wife – but the “Queen of Hearts” will always be Princess Diana for Royal fans.
