The Royal ushers in the “end of an era” in Barbados

Prince Charles traveled to Barbados on behalf of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, to attend the inauguration of President Sandra Mason and the ensuing secession from the constitutional monarchy.
It is a historic event that is currently happening in Barbados. Prince Charles, 73, arrived in the Caribbean country on Sunday, November 28, 2021 to herald the abdication of Queen Elizabeth, 95, as head of state. The royal was received by the acting diplomats of the island state as well as an honor guard and a military band.

On Tuesday, November 30, 2021, the governor general will be sworn in, replacing Queen Elizabeth in her position as head of state. The constitutional monarchy then becomes a republic. However, Barbados will continue to belong to the Commonwealth of Nations, an association of former colonies of Great Britain.

Prince Charles will attend the inauguration of the new head of state. As reported by the British media, a speech by the Prince of Wales is also expected. Presumably the Royal will encourage further cooperation between the future republic and Great Britain.

It is not the first time for the royals that he has represented the monarch in the secession of a country from the monarchy. In 1980 he traveled to Zimbabwe to witness the abdication of the British Queen. With Mason’s inauguration, Queen Elizabeth’s government will shrink from 16 to 15 countries where she is head of state, including Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
