Jakobsen further explains that Frederik already knew during his stay in the Spanish capital that his mother would abdicate. “I’m pretty sure the decision had already been made,” he said. According to him, the decision to abdicate was made shortly after Queen Margrethe’s back operation in February 2023. “I think it’s been prepared for a while. […] It was already underway when she decided to give the children of Prince Joachim to revoke their titles. This shows that there was a plan and that she wanted to clean up the mess. So in my eyes it was always her intention, but the back surgery certainly made the whole thing more mature.”
