Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan attended the Salute to Freedom 2021 gala in New York to show their respect and gratitude to the US military veterans. Harry spoke about his decision to emigrate to the United States and how much his life has changed.
Prince Harry, 37, has a very special connection with the military. He himself served for years in the British Army and was stationed twice in Afghanistan. During his visit to the Salute to Freedom 2021 gala in New York, the Royal emphasized his reverence for all veterans and how his own experiences shaped him as a person.

“It’s wonderful to be back on the USS Intrepid a decade after my last visit – and a lot has changed since then,” said Prince Harry in his address before presenting the Intrepid Valor Awards to five veteran and military families. These awards from the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York are presented to outstanding personalities in recognition of their commitment. “This includes national and international heads of state, leading military and companies, elected representatives and outstanding citizens,” says the museum’s official website.
The royal took the opportunity of the presentation to put his new life in the spotlight, but was also in the mood for jokes. “Just last week I took a ride in the Oscar Mayer Wienermobil – that’s the American dream,” said Queen Elizabeth’s grandson, 95. Even though his ride in a hot dog car was certainly intended as a joke, Prinz says Harry in no doubt that moving to the US was the right decision for him.

It’s been almost two years since Duchess Meghan, 40, and her husband decided to leave London behind and build a new life in California. A time when Prince Harry has apparently drawn to conclusions: “I have to say that when I see your support for all those who put themselves in danger to defend our freedoms, it is remarkable and I have great respect for it. ” His feelings would remind him of “the respect we British feel for our military”.
Due to his decision to leave the royal family as Senior Royal, Harry had to give up his military titles. The evening in New York made it clear how painful this point in particular must still be for him. Even if the prince is no longer allowed to use his titles, he insisted on wearing four medals and the cross of the Royal Victorian Order at the event.
