Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan: Britain has to deal with the colonial past

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have called on people in Britain to work through their colonial past.

Britain is supposed to recall its colonial past and do everything possible to make up for mistakes made during this period. This is the opinion of Duchess Meghan (38) and Prince Harry (35), who spoke in a video conference of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust with young people who are committed to equal opportunities and equality across the globe.

This was necessary even if it was "uncomfortable", said Prince Harry. "If we look at the Commonwealth, there is absolutely no way to move forward without looking back at our past," the 35-year-old said. There are many people who have already done a great job in this regard and have tried to make up for these mistakes. However, there is still a lot to do.

"It won't be easy, and in some cases, it won't be easy, but it has to happen. After all, everyone benefits," Harry added. The Commonwealth is made up of 54 states. Almost all of them were under British colonial rule. In the course of the global debate on racism, the British colonial era is currently being discussed intensely.

Equality is a fundamental human right

"Equality does not create disadvantages for anyone. It ensures that we all have the same opportunities – which is a fundamental human right," added Duchess Meghan. Above all, it is the everyday moments in which racism becomes recognizable and thrives. "For many, the role they play both passively and actively in it may be confusing," said the 38-year-old. But she was sure that a rethinking of the people had started.

As soon as you realize that you are biased in whatever way, you have to work on it and be aware of it again and again, Prince Harry continues. "Only then can you fight something that is so wrong in our society," Harry said afterwards.

The Queen's Commonwealth Trust uses its networks, platform, and resources to help young people from across the Commonwealth realize their dreams as young leaders and support their hopes for the future.
