Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan: Couple pays surprise visit to US veterans

Prince Harry (39) and his wife Meghan (42) paid a visit to veterans and soldiers still in service at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California last Wednesday (November 8th). The couple posted about the meeting, which took place without much fanfare, some impressions on the own homepage “Archewell”.

Accordingly, the Sussexes spent Wednesday morning with the (ex-)soldiers and their families. Pictures show the two of them in lively conversations with those present; in one photo they are sitting together at a large table. One of the big topics was the so-called “Operation Bigs”. This is a mentoring program that was founded in 2004 and is specifically tailored to children of military families.

The goals of “Operation Bigs” state: “The program connects young people and families with mentors who can relate to the shared experiences and challenges that arise when one or both parents are in military service.” This applies to times when they are “currently on duty or have returned from it”. Over 3,000 children from military families have already been supported in this way.

Prince Harry served for over ten years

As is well known, Prince Harry knows very well what it means to serve in the military. From 2005 to 2007 he received officer training and in 2006 he became a member of the Blues and Royals Guard Cavalry Regiment. He was part of the British Army for just over ten years before it was announced in 2015 that the royal had retired from active military service.

Harry and Meghan’s visit can, according to “People” be seen as a run-up to an important date that is coming up next Saturday (November 11th). Then Veterans Day takes place in the USA, commemorating the numerous victims on the anniversary of the armistice in the First World War. It is the US equivalent of the UK’s Remembrance Day.
