The great success of Prince Harry, 38, and Duchess Meghan, 41, does not seem to be quite the same, even about three years after they moved to America. Despite some minor successes, critics believe the Sussexes are still struggling to settle in their new home. A royal insider suspects that a lack of planning is the reason.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have ‘serious growing pains’

In June, the million-dollar deal with the audio streaming service Spotify ended by “mutual agreement”, so there will be no second season for Meghan’s twelve-part podcast “Archetypes”. Bill Simmons, one of the managing directors, publicly expressed his displeasure with the Sussexes shortly afterwards. And the collaboration with Netflix also seems to be progressing slowly – not least because the entertainment industry itself is currently being shaken by a writers’ strike.

Recent headlines surrounding the Sussexes reflected “serious growing pains” for their Archewell brand, senior media strategist Joe Quenqua told People.

There was “not necessarily a five-year plan”

In addition, there was “not necessarily a five-year plan” after the two left the British royal family as working senior royals, an insider suspects in an interview with “People”. It was a vital decision, as the two explained shortly afterwards in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, 69. Royal life “wasn’t a world they wanted for their family,” the source continued. Their choices reflected that, he notes. “Everything else will fall into place, no matter how long it takes.”

After emigrating to Montecito, California, just outside Hollywood, Harry and Meghan have faced a number of challenges, including the coronavirus pandemic, the resulting studio cutbacks and the ongoing strikes. So it’s hardly surprising that their deals with Netflix and Spotify have not been successful so far. “The fact that they’re royals, and in a way the drama surrounding them, has pushed up the price, contracts and expectations,” said a Hollywood insider.

A source close to the Archetypes production explained that the Spotify collaboration flopped: “They weren’t given any formal direction to get things started, so they were on shaky ground before the ink was dry.”

Some experts also believe that Harry and Meghan are held to a higher standard than others. “Very few other production companies are measured by what actually gets released,” says a source close to the couple.
