Prince Philip was anything but enthusiastic about the Megxit. As he watched Prince Harry and Meghan put their plans into action, he couldn’t resist a nasty quip.

Prince Philip, † 99, and Queen Elizabeth, 96, have dedicated their lives to the British monarchy. There is no doubt that the couple cares deeply about the kingdom. Now journalist Andrew Morton is publishing in-depth insights into the life of the Queen and her late husband in the “Daily Mail”. A surprising saying by Prince Philip, which is now known thanks to the journalist, reveals a lot about the character of the prince – and about his opinion on the so-called Megxit.

Prince Philip: “What the hell are they doing?!”

Two years ago, Prince Harry, 37, and his wife Duchess Meghan, 40, informed the Queen that they wanted to step down as “Senior Royals”. Despite this, they planned to continue to serve the monarchy through private social engagement. A circumstance that at the time met with little enthusiasm from the male head of the family. With the Megxit consummated and the Sussexes trying to find their own way, Prince Philip responded with the angry words:

“What the hell are they doing?!”

Queen Elizabeth: Plans were like being ‘partially pregnant’

And even Queen Elizabeth initially had little understanding for Harry and Meghan’s demands. She said it was impossible for the Sussexes to have one foot in the royal family and one foot out. Nevertheless, the Queen replied with humor: It would be like being “partially pregnant”, the 96-year-old is said to have said. The queen probably wasn’t visibly angry. Because, according to the journalist, it was unusual for her to openly show her resentment. Her reaction: an intense gaze and a raising of the eyebrows. She learned early on that big allegations would only make the situation worse.

Does Queen Elizabeth secretly understand Harry and Meghan?

Another detail that author Andrew Morton reveals also suggests that the Queen was more understanding of the Megxit than it seems. While pregnant with her first son, Crown Prince Charles, 73, she confided in Eileen Parker. She was the wife of Mike Parker, †81, who was a close friend of Prince Philip. According to Eileen Parker, Elizabeth wanted her children to grow up more freely than herself. The Queen often used the word “normal”. “I wish they could lead an ordinary life,” Elizabeth said, under “normal conditions.”

While Prince Charles, on the other hand, had to prepare for his future role as a child as a child, Elizabeth’s grandson Harry and his wife Meghan seem to have come a little closer to a “normal” life through the Megxit. A situation that the Queen should actually be happy about, given the wish she had for her own children at the time.
