For many years the HMY Britannia was the Queen’s royal yacht. A new ship may now be built.

If British Prime Minister Boris Johnson (56) has his way, Great Britain could soon get a new flagship. This is to replace the decommissioned HMY Britannia and to be named after the recently deceased Prince Philip (1921-2021). This works out from a report in the British newspaper “The Daily Telegraph” emerge.

Johnson could therefore possibly reveal corresponding plans in the coming weeks, it continues. The project is expected to cost up to £ 200 million – the equivalent of around 230 million euros. Philip, who was closely associated with the Royal Navy during his lifetime, could be honored in this way.

Commemorative coins for funding?

From the environment of the premier, however, it was recently said that there are currently no corresponding plans reports the “Daily Mirror”. A spokesman has not confirmed reports that the project may be announced anytime soon. However, according to the report, the UK has been considering buying a new royal yacht for some time.

The Britannia was in service for several decades, up to 1997, and has been permanently anchored in Edinburgh, Scotland, ever since. Several weeks ago the “Daily Telegraph” reportedthat there are considerations to have five-pound coins minted in memory of the Prince Consort of Queen Elizabeth II (95). The income from the sale of the coins could then be used to help finance a monument or a new yacht, it was said at the time.
