Prince William: Royal comments on investigation into Diana's BBC interview

Prince William wants to know the truth behind his mother's BBC interview. He is happy with the second investigation that has been initiated.

Prince William (38) first commented on the investigation into the legendary BBC interview of his mother, Princess Diana (1961-1997), in 1995. The firstborn of the deceased Princess of Wales made a statement that he welcomed the decision of the British television network. It is "a step in the right direction," quotes the British Daily Mail, among others. The investigation should "help to find out the truth behind the actions that led to the interview and the subsequent decisions of the BBC".

What it is about

The BBC journalist Martin Bashir (57) is accused of using lies and slander to persuade Princess Diana to conduct the exclusive interview, which was followed by 23 million people at the time. Among other things, it is alleged that he used fake bank statements to pretend that employees of the royal family had sold information about the then wife of Prince Charles (72). The incident was investigated in 1996, but Bashir was acquitted of any wrongdoing.

On Wednesday (November 18th) the BBC ordered a new investigation. Former Supreme Court Justice Lord John Dyson, 77, will lead this. Company employees should be interviewed and possibly informative documents from that time made available. Bashir is still working as an editor at the BBC, but according to the broadcaster, he is currently recovering from a heart operation and complications related to Covid-19.
