This Saturday, February 17, the Anglo-Saxon media Express returns to the nickname given by Prince William to his daughter, Princess Charlotte. It all dates back to 2019, when Kate Middleton, her husband and their three children were filmed during their visit to Chelsea Flower Show, floral exhibition within which the Princess of Wales had created an educational garden. In this video, the father then had called his little girl “Mignonette” while it played.
It was enough for Internet users to get excited by commenting on this nickname, which would be of French origin. As our colleagues assure us, this is the contraction of the word cute and the suffix “ette”, making the word a little more touching. But quickly, it was clarified that “no one says that in French” and that mignonette relates rather to “small bottles [d’alcool] that we find in a minibar” at the hotel and not a synonym for “my darling”. Knowing that the sister of Princes George and Louis could be nicknamed like this is therefore surprising, especially since this word is also that of a sauce to add to oysters, made with shallots, pepper and red wine vinegar.

A nickname absolutely not common in France
For an Internet user, the origin of Princess Charlotte’s nickname could be linked to this sauce, since one of its key ingredients is called Shallot in Englishpronounced with a British accent, so it could be a way of calling the little girl affectionately. “I’m 100% French and I’ve never heard anyone use that nickname,” declared an Internet user, as reported by our colleagues. Anyway, the sister of princes George and Louis would also have as another nickname “Lottie”, which seems to be a diminutive of her first name. It was her mother, Kate Middleton, who indicated that she called her daughter that, during a conversation with blogger Laura-Ann, when she visited the Windsor Park stadium.
