In honor of Queen Letizia and King Felipe, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands are hosting a state banquet in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening. Princess Amalia is also there – and is the real star of the evening.
Royal fans were looking forward to this evening event: in the frame On their two-day trip to the Netherlands, King Felipe, 56, and his wife Queen Letizia, 51, are expecting a state banquet with around 240 guests. The noble dinner is mainly attended by the female members of both royal families in elaborate robes and expensive pieces of jewelry. In addition to the fact that Letizia greets the guests sitting and not standing like everyone else, Princess Amalia’s, 20, appearance catches the eye.
Princess Amalia: This makes her a star at the state banquet
For the first time, Princess Amalia accompanies her parents to a state banquet in the Netherlands. For this occasion she not only wears a particularly beautiful dress, but also meaningful jewels. Even though her tiara isn’t the biggest of the evening – her mother Máxima and Letizia surpass her headdress in size and carats, it’s the combination of her jewelry that makes her the star of the evening.
No, it is not the first time that Crown Princess Amalia Ruby peacock parure carries. This is the third time she has been able to appear in the classic piece with rows of diamonds between the red gemstones, but for the first time at a state banquet in the Netherlands. But it’s not just the tiara that’s impressive. Princess Amalia is also wearing the necklace and diamond cluster earrings that evening. The ruby bracelet on her right wrist and a narrow ring complete the high-class look.

It is the larger of two ruby tiaras owned by the Dutch royal family. It was made for the family by Mellerio dits Meller, one of the most important French jewelry makers. The parure, which consists of a tiara, necklace, earrings, bracelet, brooch and a ruby-studded fan, was a gift to Queen Emma in 1889 from her husband King Willem III. Since Emma, all four Dutch queens have worn the tiara and other parts of the parure – as have many princesses. Queen Juiana is said to have loved the jewelry ensemble so much that she even wore the brooch on her inauguration day.
By allowing Amalia the honor of wearing the almost full ruby and peacock parure this evening, the attention is clearly focused on her. She is the one on whom eyes should be turned to highlight her position as heir to the throne. This will also come through their positioning in the group photo clear: Amalia is standing in the middle, the first thing you notice. The exclusive selection of jewelry made from high-caliber royal pieces reinforces this.

These 2 things stand out in Letizia and Máxima’s look
1. Queen Letizia wears a wedding dress
Yes, Cartier’s diamond loop tiara, also called “Tiara Rusa” in Spain due to its resemblance to the traditional Russian headdress, glitters beautifully on Letizia’s head. But it’s not the headdress, Queen Edna’s diamond earrings or the gray pearl brooch, also from the “Joyas des Pasar” collection, that stand out – but Letizia’s dress in cobalt blue.

The beautiful robe with a boxy neckline, Japanese sleeves and lace decorations on the cuffs was not originally designed as evening wear, but as a wedding dress. The designers Juan Carlos Fernández and Antonio Burillo, who designed the model for their label “The 2nd Skin”, already dressed the Spanish queen at the 2021 award ceremony Princess of Asturias Prize. They thought of something very special for their appearance at the state banquet in the Netherlands: actually white wedding dress “Suraia” for around 4,800 euros was not only recolored, but also optically adapted to the queen’s requirements.
This is what the original version of The 2nd Skin Co. wedding dress looks like. The gorgeous light-reflecting fabric comes in both white and cobalt blue.

- The cutout The original design was even more high-necked, but also boxy.
- The train turns out to be reduced. The bridal skirt actually had a significantly larger train.
- The belt of the wedding dress was made of leather, the double twist and the beige tone were a nice detail. However, this no longer matches Letizia’s recolored model – a belt was made for her from the same fabric and color with a square buckle.
2. Máxima excels in all areas
Queen Máxima, 52, has no problem dressing more casually than other monarchs for many appointments in her busy calendar. Not only does she love affordable clothing, but she also surprisingly often uses costume jewelry. But that evening she takes everything in her royal jewelry box.
She has complete freedom in her choice of clothing nothing to chance. Because she works with one of her favorite designers, Dutchman Jan Taminiau, she looks beautiful in her dove gray gown. She remains true to herself and uses the same combination of jewelry as she did at a banquet at Buckingham Palace in 2018. The visit of the Spanish royal couple seems to be just as important to her – for this occasion she is bringing the high-profile royals out of the treasury.
For Letizia and Felipe, Máxima wears her most ostentatious diamonds – a special feature.

These pieces of jewelry can be admired at Queen Máxima’s state banquet:
- The size Stuart tiara is wearing Máxima for only the second time since 2018. The pear-shaped Stuart diamond, which is presently attached to the tiara, counts 39.75 carats. He was commissioned by King William III. and Queen Mary of England acquired it in the seventeenth century. Since they had no descendants, the gem was returned to Wilhelm’s home country: the Netherlands.
- The diamond stomacher, which Máxima wears on the neckline of her dress is also part of the Stuart parure. A “stomach” is a traditional piece of jewelry that originally became popular in the 15th century and was worn over the stomach area to decorate a woman’s bodice or corset.
- The big ones Diamond drop earrings from the 19th century once belonged to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.
