The two-year war of divorce between Princess Haya bint al-Hussein, 47, and her ex-husband Sheikh Mohammed bin Raschid Al Maktoum, 72, went down as one of the largest divorce cases in British legal history. He not only brought dirty marriage details to light, but also condemned Dubai’s rulers, according to British media reports, of having to pay the astronomical sum of around 645 million euros to his ex. That was decided by the Supreme Civil Court in London on December 21, 2021.

The Jordanian princess fled Dubai to Great Britain with her daughter and son from Dubai in June 2019. There she filed for divorce from her husband Sheikh Mohammed, Emir of Dubai and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates – and has since fought for her independence and custody of her children. The sheikh wanted the offspring with him in Dubai. However, Haya’s filings for warnings against her husband revealed domestic violence and concerns about her children being forced into marriage. In October, the trial also revealed that the sheikh had spied on her and her lawyers using the “Pegasus” spy software.

One can hardly imagine how terrible the last few years must have been for Princess Haya. Now she can finally look ahead – with the record-breaking sum of the equivalent of 645 million euros in her luggage.
1. How the record sum is split and what it covers
According to the BBC, the astronomical payment includes a flat-rate compensation of around 295 million euros. In addition, Haya receives money to maintain two properties that cost several million euros and for an extensive security budget that also includes armored vehicles. Further sums are used for the salaries and accommodation of a nanny and a nurse, for school fees and leisure activities, and for the care of several pets and ponies for their children.
