Sad news from Norway: Princess Ingrid Alexandra will not be able to celebrate her 18th birthday in January 2022 as planned.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway will turn 18 on January 21, 2022 – actually a reason to celebrate. The coming of age of the runner-up in the line of succession is a major event under normal circumstances, which is honored with opulent celebrations. But the planned celebrations have now been canceled.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra: No celebration for the 18th birthday

The reason: The corona situation in Norway is worsening. The number of infections is increasing noticeably, partly due to the Omikron virus variant. Therefore, the government of the Scandinavian country is putting stricter measures in place. This also affects the celebrations for Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s 18th birthday.

A gala dinner was planned in the castle. In addition, the Norwegian government wanted to host a dinner on the day before Prince Haakon’s and Princess Mette-Marit’s daughter came of age. This was to take place in Oslo’s new Deichman Bjørvika library. In addition to the dinner, musical interludes and many cultural elements were also planned. Young people from all over the country should join the celebration.

Statement by the Norwegian government

The palace has announced the postponement of the gala dinner on its official website and the government has also published a statement. “Coming of age is a big event in the life of all young people. This applies not least to an heir to the throne who is supposed to represent Norway and the Norwegian people,” said State Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, 61, in a statement.

“I was looking forward to celebrating Princess Ingrid Alexandra on the day she came of age, but unfortunately the infection situation does not make it possible now. I still hope that she will have a nice party with her loved ones.” It also says that the official celebration of the day and the gala dinner will be postponed “until it makes the contagion situation at major events justifiable.”
