Princess Madeleine + Princess Sofia: End of the royal feud?

The relationship between Princess Madeleine and Princess Sofia was long considered tense, the reason being Prince Carl Philip’s ex-girlfriend. In the meantime, however, the sisters-in-law should understand each other better again – for this reason.

It’s an open secret that Princess Madeleine, 40, and Princess Sofia, 37, aren’t supposed to be best friends. This is said to be due to Emma Pernald, the ex-girlfriend of Prince Carl Philip, 43, with whom Madeleine maintains an intimate relationship even after the love affair – and that is exactly the problem.

Prince Carl Philips’ ex is the reason behind the feud between the sisters-in-law

Before Carl Philip started dating Sofia, he was in a relationship with Emma Pernald for a number of years, the two met and fell in love at the tender age of 19 and even moved in together. All signs pointed to marriage until Emma and Carl Philip surprisingly announced their separation in March 2009.

After the love affair, the only son of King Carl Gustaf, 76, and Queen Silvia, 78, met Sofia Hellqvist, in 2015 they said yes and are now the proud parents of three sons: Prince Alexander, 6, Prince Gabriel, 4, and Prince Julian, 1. “I don’t think I knew the magic of love before I met Sofia. But then I met her and I really felt how love can change a person,” Carl Philip once said in an interview in 2015 with the TV channel “TV 4”. His younger sister Madeleine is said to have been anything but happy about his new relationship, after all she has been friends with Emma Pernald for a long time and would have liked to have had her as a sister-in-law. But the breakup didn’t stop the two women from seeing each other regularly on Madeleine’s home visits.

This is said to have strained the relationship between Madeleine and Sofia for a long time, but now the two seem to have gotten closer again. Footage from this year’s Victoria Day, July 14, 2022, shows the two princesses chatting on their way to the concert in the ruins of Borgholm Castle. Karin Lennmor, columnist for the Swedish newspaper Expressen, also noticed that there was no sign of differences: “They enjoy each other’s company, are both mothers of small children and can help each other with the small children.”

In addition, Princess Madeleine and Princess Sofia live with their families during their time on the island of Öland in the so-called Kavaliershaus. Although the property is over 500 square meters, the two women often cross paths here and have enough time to exchange ideas and put old feuds behind.
