Amid the scandal surrounding Prince Frederik’s alleged affair with a Mexican socialite, a Danish newspaper has unearthed Princess Mary’s 2004 book. In it she expresses a clear opinion on the subject of infidelity in marriage.
On November 7, 2023, the Spanish gossip newspaper “Lecturas” published a paparazzi photo of Prince Frederik, 55, and the Mexican celebrity Genoveva Casanova, trying to accuse them of an affair. However, the joint museum visit and dinner in the heart of Madrid were purely of a friendly nature, Casanova denies almost at the same time.
And yet the Danish Crown Prince and his wife Princess Mary, 51, have had to deal with negative headlines almost every day since then. In keeping with this, the Norwegian newspaper “Se og Hør” takes a look at Mary’s statements about infidelity in marriage, which she made in her 2004 book “Kronprinsesse Mary” – and they are clear.

And so it is that Princess Mary’s decision to fly alone to her homeland of Australia with the twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, both 12, caused shocked faces in Denmark. Prince Frederik and Princess Isabella, 16, are coming soon. School appointments and royal duties prevented them from traveling together, the palace confirmed to the Danish newspaper “Billet Bladet”. No wonder that the Danish publication “Se og Hør” has now dug up her statements about infidelity in marriage so soon after Mary’s sensational decision.
For Mary, infidelity is “a very serious breach of trust”
So in the issue published on December 6th, “Se og Hør” quotes Mary as saying: “I would not accept infidelity within a marriage.” Prince Frederik’s wife made this clear to author Anne Wolden-Ræthinge when the topic of extramarital relationships came up.
The book “Crown Princess Mary” was launched on May 18, 2004, four days after her wedding to the Crown Prince and before the birth of their four children. And yet nothing has changed in their opinion since then. For Princess Mary, infidelity is “a very serious breach of trust” that is difficult to repair. A big problem for the survival of the marriage, because “it is necessary that you trust each other completely,” continues Mary. For her, “monogamy is of central importance.”
“I wouldn’t be able to do it. It hurts”
The Crown Princess is aware that there would also be other forms of relationships such as an open marriage. However, she rejects such a regulation: “I wouldn’t be able to do it. It hurts.” If children come into the relationship, they are part of the relationship. It’s less about yourself. “You also have obligations towards them,” Mary, who was still childless at the time, made clear. They are words that are likely to resonate well into 2023.
