Probationary license: can you drive at night? : Current Woman Le MAG

Whether you have just obtained the license for the first time or have regained it after a suspension, the probationary license grants you certain rights, but also binds you to certain obligations. Does this particularly concern the times at which you can drive?

Probationary license: driving on the road subject to a curfew?

Contrary to what you may hear or read from time to time, the French probationary driving license does not include any measure prohibiting its holders from driving at night. This is, however, the case in another French-speaking region abroad since, in Quebec, young drivers recently holding a probationary license cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. This new provision was introduced during the driving license reform, which came into force in May 2018. However, in France, this is not (yet) the case: the probationary license can be used 24 hours a day. , 7 days on 7.

Other limitations imposed by the probationary license

This does not mean that the probationary license does not introduce specificities, the main one of which is obviously the presence of six points, and not twelve as for a traditional driving license. If you have a probationary license, you are also required to indicate your status on the rear of your vehicle with an “A” sticker, and your maximum speed is limited: 110 km/h on the motorway ( instead of 130), 100 km/h on a separate road (compared to 110) and 80 km/h on a national road (instead of 90).

As a reminder, the duration of a probationary license is set at three years for holders who obtained it through the traditional route, and is lowered to two years for drivers trained in accompanied driving.
