Club continues to work its way up against top team Kiel

Newly promoted SV Elversberg is on a roll: the club also wins in a turbulent duel in Magdeburg and stays in the promotion ranks. Holstein Kiel missed out on a jump to just that, and the North Germans suffered a setback against Nuremberg.

SV Wehen Wiesbaden – Hansa Rostock 1:0 (0:0)

Newly promoted SV Wehen Wiesbaden has fought for another three points in the fight to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Hessians won 1-0 (0-0) against Hansa Rostock on matchday 11. Ivan Prtajin (89th) scored the decisive goal for SVWW.

In front of almost 10,000 spectators, John Iredale missed the great chance to give the hosts the lead after just 90 seconds. An entertaining game then developed with opportunities for both sides. After a clumsy foul by Wiesbaden’s goalkeeper Florian Stritzel, Christian Kinsombi was denied from the spot by the SVWW keeper (32′).

Shortly after the restart, Iredale had the first goal on their feet again, but was denied by Rostock goalkeeper Markus Kolke (47′). After that, fighting was the trump card on both sides, and there were no major chances for a long time. It wasn’t until the 76th that Rostock’s John Patrick Strauss caused danger again.

Holstein Kiel – 1. FC Nuremberg 0:2 (0:0)

Holstein Kiel missed out on a promotion spot. Coach Marcel Rapp’s team deservedly lost 0-2 (0-0) at home against 1. FC Nürnberg and suffered a setback in the fight for the top spot.

The club, on the other hand, is moving further and further up with its third win from the last four games. Tim Handwerker took the lead for Cristian Fiel’s team in the 68th minute in front of 12,000 spectators. Nuremberg’s top talent Can Uzun (77th) made the preliminary decision. It was the 17-year-old’s fifth goal of the season.

It was a game of equals from the start. Neither team was able to gain an advantage before the break – even with the big chances: On the Kiel side, Lewis Holtby missed the possible lead, on the club side it was Handwerker. Otherwise there were hardly any gaps, although Nuremberg recorded more deals. Even after the change, the game initially remained balanced and very competitive. Many duels took place in midfield, but highlights remained in short supply – until Handwerker had some luck with a deflected low shot. Uzun followed up coldly on a counterattack.

1. FC Magdeburg – SV Elversberg 1:2 (0:2)

Newcomer SV Elversberg continues its strong run and remains in the promotion ranks. Coach Horst Steffen’s team won 2-1 (2-0) at 1. FC Magdeburg on Sunday. After seven games in a row without defeat, the SVE has 18 points and is keeping up.

Jannik Rochelt (12th) and Maurice Neubauer (35th) scored the guests’ fifth win of the current season. Substitute Connor Krempicki (70th) scored for the hosts. The Magdeburgers have to move downwards in the table because, after a good start to the season, they have not won in six games. In the final phase, referee Lukas Benen withdrew what was supposed to be a foul penalty for the hosts after video evidence because of a swoop by Tatsuya Ito (90th + 4).

In the MDCC Arena, the Elversbergers were compact at the beginning and let the Magdeburgers come. While the hosts hardly came up with any offensive solutions in the first half, the Saarlanders resorted to counterattacks. Rochelt refined one of these, which was put in the spotlight by Luca Schnellbacher after a long ball. After an impressive combination, Neubauer scored with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area.

After the break, Magdeburg came out of the locker room with a little more momentum and created a few half-chances. The 1974 European Cup winners only became really dangerous when Herbert Bockhorn crossed inward from the right side and Krempicki scored the goal.
