Whether for opening a bank account, issuing a passport, a driving license or as part of a purchase, you may be asked for proof of address. As its name suggests, this document is used to prove to the organization that you are currently domiciled at the address you communicated to it.

What are the valid proof of address documents?

Proof of address can take the form of an invoice, a tax notice or an official nominative document. Here are some examples of documents that are accepted:

  • water, gas or electricity bills;
  • telephone or Internet subscription bills;
  • tax notices for income tax or housing tax;
  • rent receipts;
  • housing insurance certificates or invoices;
  • statements from the family allowance fund (CAF) relating to housing assistance.

To be accepted, the document must include your full contact details (surname, first name and postal address) and come from a recognized official body. Furthermore, it must also be recent. Depending on the situation, you will be asked for proof dated less than 1 year, 6 months or 3 months ago. Please note, however, that mobile phone or Internet bills are not always accepted as proof of address. And for good reason, these subscriptions are not necessarily linked to the customer’s place of residence.

What proof of address for an identity card or passport?

If you wish to apply for or renew your national identity card or passport, you will need to provide proof of address. This may be a telephone bill (landline or mobile), an electricity or gas bill, a water bill, a rent receipt (from a social organization or a real estate agency) or title deed, a tax notice or certificate of non-taxation, proof of housing tax, a CAF statement mentioning housing assistance or even a housing insurance certificate or invoice. Please note, these documents must include your first and last name and be dated less than one year from the date of submission of the application.

What proof of address for a driving license?

Several documents can serve as valid proof of address for a driving license application. You can give a water, electricity, gas, landline or mobile phone bill, a tax or non-tax notice or even a rent receipt. Please note, however, that this proof of address must be dated less than six months ago.

What proof of address for the bank?

The procedure is the same for sending proof of address to your banking establishment. On the other hand, here you will have to present a more recent original document less than three months old. This paper will then be returned to you by the bank, after it has made a copy of the document.

What proof of address for a registration document?

If you need to obtain your registration document, also called a registration certificate, you will need to prove your address with an official document. What proof of address when you are accommodated free of charge?

If you are hosted by a relative and therefore free of charge, you cannot therefore provide proof of address. But don’t panic, this situation is in no way an obstacle to the successful completion of your administrative procedures. All you need to do is provide proof of address in the name of your host, to which you will attach a sworn accommodation certificate signed by the latter and certifying that you live under their roof, as well as a copy of the identity card of the person hosting you.
