Propagation of the Omicron variant: the Capcom Cup VIII canceled in person

The Capcom Cup VIII will not take place face to face this year, it’s now official. Because of the Covid pandemic and in particular the propagation of the Omicron variant, Capcom has decided cancel Capcom Cup VIII face-to-face so also the Street Fighter League: World Championship 2021. All of this is detailed in their official statement:

With the increase in COVID-19 cases, including the Omicron variant, causing uncertainty and complications globally, Capcom once again finds itself in the difficult position of having to cancel the Capcom Cup. The team did not make this decision lightly, as we know what the Capcom Cup means for the community and the players who have trained so diligently to qualify. The entire esports team extends our sincere apologies. Please know that we share your frustrations, as we wanted nothing more than the return of this event in a big way, but the health and safety of the players and everyone involved is our top priority.

Capcom Cup VIII

The Capcom Cup event, which was scheduled to be held in the United States in February 2022, will be canceled. However, as an alternative, Capcom will produce an online season finale event featuring the players who have won the right to compete in Capcom Cup VIII. Stay tuned for more information.

Street Fighter League: World Championship 2021

The Street Fighter League: World Championship 2021, a competition between the top two teams in the Street Fighter League: Pro-US 2021 and Street Fighter League: Pro-JP 2021, was to be held in February 2022 during the Capcom Cup VIII. The 2021 Street Fighter League World Championship will also be canceled.

Please note that cancellations and tournament changes above are subject to change without notice.

This January 6, E3 also announced that they would not organize a face-to-face convention but for now, no online event date has been communicated. The Capcom Cup VIII is therefore the second event to be canceled in recent days.

Capcom has however planned an online event in compensation for the cancellation of Capcom Cup VIII and Street Fighter League: World Championship 2021.
