Protecting the climate and resources: Proper waste separation in everyday kitchen life

Spinach boxes or yoghurt pots: If you dispose of food packaging correctly, you help protect the environment! Find out here how it works and win one of two Wesco waste bins.

Packaging protects food. But what to do when they are empty? In order for food packaging to be recycled, it must be properly separated and disposed of. This protects the climate and resources: According to a study by the Öko-Institut, the recycling of glass, paper and lightweight packaging in Germany results in 1.95 million tons of CO2-Equivalents saved! And this is how you help:

Basics for everyday kitchen use

Packaging made of plastic, aluminium, tinplate and composite materials such as beverage cartons belong in the yellow bin or in the yellow sack. Paper, cardboard and cardboard go into the waste paper bin. Glass bottles and glass containers are sorted by color and thrown into used glass containers.

So you separate even better

Lid off: yoghurt cups & Co.

The empty plastic yoghurt pot belongs in the yellow bin or yellow bag. But please separate them well: throw in plastic cups and aluminum lids separately. The paper casing goes into the waste paper. In principle, the following applies to all packaging: remove the lid, aluminum foil or transparent film, for example from the cheese packaging, and then dispose of the components in the yellow bin or yellow sack.

The ordeal: spinach boxes & Co.

Spinach, fries or pizza: the packaging for frozen products consists of different materials and is disposed of in different ways.

For example, frozen spinach: If the packaging is made of cardboard, it goes in the waste paper bin. If it is coated with plastic, it is considered a composite and belongs in the yellow bin or yellow bag. This is easy to test – with a small tear test: If film remains on the tear-off edge, the packaging is a case for the yellow bin or the yellow sack. These are also bags made of film plastic, such as for French fries, and plastic or aluminum trays for ready meals. And the pizza packaging from the supermarket? The outer packaging made of paper goes with the waste paper, the thin protective film with the packaging waste.
