protection perimeter, open bridges, closed metros… the system put in place eight days before the opening ceremony

The protection perimeter for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be put in place from July 18, eight days before the opening ceremony, the police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, announced on Thursday April 25. “We wanted to integrate all the buildings which have a visual view of the Seine”he said during a press conference at the police headquarters, referring to the first row of buildings along the Seine.

Perimeters set up from July 18 to 26.

Perimeters set up on the day of the Olympic opening ceremony.

Anyone who resides within this perimeter or wishes to enter it, by car or on foot, will have to register on the digital platform, which is scheduled to open on May 10, and will be subject to a security investigation (“screening”). “Spectators will not be affected by these investigations”underlined Laurent Nuñez.

This area concerns around 20,000 local residents, said the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.

All around this protection zone, located as close as possible to the river, will be deployed, also from July 18, “a perimeter prohibiting motorized traffic”. For this perimeter, “we will not be required to register on the platform or have a QR Code”specified Laurent Nuñez, referring to “more flexible assessments at police checkpoints”.

“We want to disrupt people’s lives as little as possible. Local residents, people who work there, deliveries will be able to benefit from exemptions at any time of the day”, he assured. Nevertheless, “from 1:00 p.m. on the day of the ceremony”most exemptions “will no longer be valid for circulation within this perimeter”said Mr. Nuñez.

Furthermore, to avoid having “a Paris cut in two for eight days”five crossing bridges will be maintained.

The prefecture published a video on X which summarizes the system:

Around fifteen metro stations closed

There will be no restrictions on inviting people to their homes for people with a balcony overlooking the Seine, but they will also have to register on the platform. The fifteen metro stations which lead into the protection perimeter will be closed:

Anne Hidalgo added that 1,000 municipal police officers would be deployed on the day of the opening ceremony. The 220,000 spectators on the high platforms of the opening ceremony, beneficiaries of invitations, will be divided into 15 zones ranging from 600 to 40,000 people and will be able to watch the show on 65 giant screens.

The first installations planned for the opening ceremony, a six-kilometer parade between the Pont d’Austerlitz and the Pont d’Iéna, are planned from June 17. From 1er July, the first bans on motorized traffic will affect certain areas.
