Restricted to members of the Visionary beta program only since December, applications Proton Mail for Windows and macOS are finally accessible to all paying subscribers.

In addition to opening its desktop clients to its entire premium community, the Swiss company took the opportunity to unveil a beta version of its Linux application. Proton Mail and Proton Calendar are now compatible with all desktop and mobile operating systems, offering Internet users the same security and encryption conditions as their web equivalents.

Multiplatform coverage now complete

After three months of testing with members of the Visionary beta program, Proton Mail is finally releasing a stable version on Windows and macOS, allowing everyone to access Proton Mail and Proton Calendar without using a web browser. Although it is reserved for Internet users with a paid subscription, users who have opted for the free version of the service will be able to try the desktop client for 14 days, at no cost.

In detail, Proton Mail for Windows and macOS offers the same features and security measures as its web version. End-to-end encryption is there, and subscribers to the service find all the protection tools they are used to, namely advanced protection against phishing, protection against email trackers, as well as the Hide-my-email option, recently integrated into Proton’s email service.

An application ecosystem to compete with Google and Microsoft

The deployment of a desktop application for Proton Mail is part of Proton’s desire to offer its subscribers secure alternatives to platforms distributed by major web players, including Google and Microsoft. By focusing on desktop versions of its tools, the Swiss company seeks to offer convincing solutions, linked to each other, so as to create an ecosystem of private services by default, accessible online and offline.

By 2023, Proton AG had already developed Windows and macOS apps for Proton Drive, and unveiled an automatic photo sync feature on Android, iOS and the web to compete with Google Photos. At the end of February 2024, Proton Pass landed on Windows, completing the mobile coverage offered by the company.

Finally, it will be recalled that Proton AG strives to regularly deploy new features intended to strengthen the security and confidentiality of its subscribers, such as its Sentinel program – a Proton account protection program combining artificial intelligence and human expertise, its Stealth VPN protocol – capable of bypassing anti-VPN measures in totalitarian states, its automatic PGP compatibility modes with email services managing the technology, or even its support for password protection of emails for allow Proton subscribers to communicate securely with people using messaging services that are not compatible with PGP or end-to-end encryption.

9.1

Proton Mail Free

  • Robust and secure infrastructure
  • Extreme simplification of encryption
  • Located in Switzerland

Proton Mail is a serious alternative to Gmail. It redefines encryption by making it accessible to everyone. Of course, you will probably have to adopt the paid plan to get the most out of it, but it is an excellent first choice for anyone who wants to start freeing themselves from GAFAM services while being assured that communications remain private.
