IIt is a little after 2:30 p.m. on Saturday when Olivier Faure enters in majesty into the huge modern amphitheater which hosts the PS congress in Marseille. The outgoing boss of the party is flanked by Benoît Payan, the mayor of the city, and Johanna Rolland, mayor of Nantes. His induction as first secretary was well prepared. Olivier Faure arrives from the top of the auditorium, surrounded by cameras, then like a smiling boxer he descends the steps towards the stage in the midst of activists who applaud him and shout in chorus “Olivier, Olivier”. There are indeed a few whistles here and there, a few “ouh, ouh”, but the atmosphere is rather one of celebration and relief.
