Sony’s new PlayStation Plus will roll out around June 22 in Europe, offering its players three different offers, allowing them to access more or less exclusive content. But in some Asian countries, the new formula has been available since last Monday, so it is possible to get some feedback from the players present on this continent. One of these returns is not very happy…
The new PlayStation Plus
From June 22, therefore, users will have the choice between three different PS Plus offers:
- Playstation Plus Essentials (Two downloadable games every month, exclusive discounts, cloud storage for game saves plus access to online multiplayer)
- PlayStation Plus Extra (Benefits of PS Plus Essentials, access to a catalog of around 400 of the best PS4 and PS5 games)
- PlayStation Plus Premium (Benefits of PS Plus Essentials and Extra, over 340 additional games including PS2, PSP and PS3 classics, limited time trial versions)
For players with a classic PS Plus subscription (therefore equivalent to PlayStation Plus Essentials), it is thus possible upgrade, ie to switch to a more expensive version, but offering access to more content. Subscribers wishing to upgrade to a more expensive subscription will have to pay the difference. So far so good.
An upgrade pays off!
What is problematic, according to the testimony of a Reddit user located in Asia, is the subscription upgrades purchased on promotion. It is well known, sometimes PlayStation organizes promotional periods during which the PS Plus subscription is sold off and therefore much cheaper. On Reddit @Andyppbb reports that, Players who purchased the PS Plus subscription on sale and wish to upgrade to a higher subscription must pay an additional sum.
The amount players have to pay is akin to compensation, and they end up paying not only for an upgrade but also for the money saved in the promotion. For example, if a user has paid for a subscription that was worth €100 at -25% (€75), he will therefore have to pay an additional €25 if they wish to upgrade to a higher level subscription.
Outraged, many players shared their dissatisfaction on the networks, saying that it was inadmissible to make promotions and then charge the difference. However, legally, PlayStation is not at fault. It is quite possible for them to ask for compensation, because it is an upgrade and therefore another type of subscription.
Other issues
The PlayStation gaming community in Asia has also reported some issues with this new subscription. According to them, if a player has a classic annual subscription, it will be impossible for him to upgrade for a period of only one month, but for the entire duration of the subscription… or nothing !
In addition, the number of games in the catalog of extra and premium versions is disappointing. According to them, we would be far from the more than 400 games announced by Sony. However, it sometimes happens that several languages of a game are counted as several versions, and therefore several games. It is possible that the company played on it.
