Sony Interactive Entertainment had predicted: the production problems of the PS5 will still last into 2022, and anyone who wants to get a console next-gen still can’t do it with a snap of the fingers. This lasting semiconductor crisis has obviously had an impact on the manufacturer’s overall strategy.
According to Takashi Mochizuki of Bloomberg, Sony had planned to cease production of the PlayStation 4 at the end of 2021, so that the latest models flow quietly in the months that follow and that the place is made for the PS5. But while many games cross-gen are still planned and that some new players are still leaning towards the older generation, more accessible than ever, the plans would have been changed. Thereby, PS4 will continue to be assembled, with around a million machines slated for 2022, or even more depending on demand, according to the journalist’s sources.
A spokesperson for Sony said to Bloomberg that it was never planned to stop manufacturing the console, and as the internal strategy of the manufacturer is not known, we can only take his word for it. In any case, what is certain is that the production line will not be stopped right away, which he was kind enough to confirm.
It is one of the best-selling consoles of all time and there is always a cross between the generations.
It must be said that the stocks of new PS4 are not legion on the Web, many resellers currently listing it as unavailable, if not in a reconditioned version at prices that do not make you dream. Still, this extended end of life for the PlayStation 4 should not facilitate the development of exclusives next-gen taking full advantage of the power of the new consoles.
