PS5: an update on console sales as of September 30, 2022, a new milestone

The month of November has just begun and now sony takes stock of his second quarter review of its fiscal year which ran from July 1 to September 30, 2022. What obviously interests us are the activities of EIS and so the figures provided (see page 9 of the document).

Thereby, the PlayStation 5 performed well, selling 3.3 million copies in those three monthscompared to 2.4 million in the previous quarter, for a total reaching 25 million since its launch at the end of 2020. The same quantity had been sold last year over this period, so the dynamic is not new.

In terms of game sales, the big drop in the last period is history, without reaching the score of last year, especially taking into account the fact that these are cumulative sales on PS5 and PS4. Thereby, 62.5 million copies ended up in gamers, of which 6.7 are productions first party. Digital is still as popular as 63% of these purchases were made dematerialized, which compared to the number of sales gives no less than 39.375 million copies, against 37.288 million in the previous quarter.

More interestingly, following the launch of the new formulas of the Playstation Plus, what about it? Well, only 45.4 million subscribers are registered, compared to 47.3 million the previous three months. sony does not however communicate on the distribution of subscriptions, difficult to say if the two additional offers have been able to seduce.

In terms of income, even if sales were more profitable compared to last year over the same period (+12%). sony can, however, say thank you to the exchange rates with foreign countries, because the sales of games and DLCs third-party publishers decreased (slide 9 of the first document). Operating revenue fell sharply by 49% due to game development costs and the acquisition of Bungie notably, but PS5 sales don’t cause the manufacturer to lose as much money anymore. It must be said that with the increase in prices, this would be a shame… Revenue forecasts have therefore logically been revised downwards by 12%. With the many releases at the end of the year, it only remains to hope that the general trend is reversed.
